Rumor: iPod Games

Rumors have surfaced about a company named Digital River striking a deal to provide technological assistance to Apple for downloading games to the iPod. The rumor states that this service that Apple will control will be available on the "next version" of the iPod.

Whatever this next version of the iPod might be, and when it may come out is not known. However, I see this as a possibility: all models of the next version of the iPod have color screens. The games might be sold either by iTunes or by using an iTunes-like application and business model, meaning that a small fee would be charged for each game. These games might be small in file size, not very graphics intensive, and similar to the already present solitaire or the simple games found on cell phones. Apple can make money by licensing the iPod API to developers. Seems like a lot of trouble to go through for something like that though.

I have an iPod and yeah they could make snake for the iPod also but I’d like to see Billards and Chess be apart in the games menu also.

An iPod gaming API would be intensely interesting. I’m amazed they haven’t done it yet, unless they’ve waiting until the video iPod (sensible enough).

As a mobile (phone) games developer, we have to design games with a filesize under 64k, with 200k of runtime memory - and they sell for an average of $5 a pop. Good games sell well - right now, they don’t sell well enough because mobile phone operators just haven’t got decent delivery systems and too many mobile users don’t know how to connect to download, or even that there are downloads available.

iTunes is something else - it’s a real gateway. You think 1 million vids in a month is good? Multiply that by 10 for games I reckon…And I’ll sign up without hesitation.

I Found some decent free ipod games! It’s not an arcade style game but it’s really funny to play if you like Rock & Pop music.

Go to www.coolgorilla.com

Don’t expect too much but it’s well worth downloading.
