Hack A Day Illuminates iPod Recording Functionality

Those rebels who like to break things over at hack a day posted a simple how-to for using linux to unlock the recording functionality of the iPod. We always knew that high quality recording without having to purchase a special iPod microphone was hiding in there somewhere but the function was crippled by Apple's firmware.

There are also a bunch of other iPod hacks at their iPod archive.

There has been a lot of talk lately about installing a bootable linux on the iPod and I've been meaning to do some posts about it. If you do this, you can then have dual-boot functionality where the iPod will ask you which system you want to run. This is definitely cool, but at this stage, the benefits and capablilities of ipod linux is still limited. This endeavor is still for the "because it's there" crowd. However, I see that changing in the coming months. I think the movement will snowball as it works better and gains more followers. Just as the iPod linux gets really good and useful, Apple will smash it with a firmware update and it will all be for naught.
