The Format of the Future

darksideofthemoon.gif
The Washington Post has an article called, "10 Million iPods, Previewing the CD's End" where they discuss how people are sick of buying the same music repeatedly in different formats and how, "The new format is no format." They mean how technology is enabling us to move away from the storage medium and concentrate on the content (file). They interview various industry types who actually provide some real information, not just recording industry hyperbole. It's an interesting read.

But, PLEASE don't ever get rid of cover art and liner notes. The artwork is an integral part of the "package." Cover art can be a fantastic complement to the music, a visual interpretation of the sounds. It is also the first thing that you see before you open it up and give it a listen. Can you imagine Dark Side of the Moon with the prism? The Beatles White Album with the whiteness? Red Hot Chili Peppers Mother's Milk without the boob? I would so miss it...
