iTunes Originals: Aimee Mann

aimeemannitunesoriginals.jpg
I just received the iTunes New Music Tuesday email and they've got an Aimee Mann addition to their iTunes Originals series. I confess to owning two 'Til Tuesday cassettes that I think are stored in my basement somewhere, but in the last year or so I've really become an Aimee Mann fan again. Her portfolio of solo releases is quite excellent and she's matured into a really good songwriter. I love the way she sings in her clumsy falsetto, the textures of all the instruments on her albums, and how her lyrics span the range of human emotion, but are usually focused on the sad, scared, or more desperate aspects of life. I'm glad to see iTunes pairing up with her.

Her soundtrack to the movie Magnolia is one of my favorites of all time. It is so good, as a matter of fact, that PT Anderson borrowed lyrics from her songs to add to his script! The DVD Live at St. Ann's Warehouse, which I recently got, is fantastic. It's well filmed and concentrates on the music and her live show, instead of a bunch of choppy edits and special effects. You have hereby been subject to a music recommendation from iPoditude.
