iPod sales statistics (in brief: they rule)
Apple's chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer talked with Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich recently so there was a lot of news today about iPod sales:
- The innocent looking iPod shuffle has now started to ruthlessly crush its competitors by commanding a 58% share of the flash-based digital media player market. This is up from 43% in February, which amounts to a lot of the happy little white shuffles. The Mac Observer also reports that the other iPod models hold 90% share of hard disk-based DAPs and that iTunes has a 70% market share. Full article here.
- The 4GB mini is the current iPod sales leader, according to AppleInsider. They reckon that the 4GB mini is in the sweet spot of the iPod line up and I'd agree with them. In the same article they state, "In the coming months, analysts expect Apple will reshuffle its iPod offerings once again, introducing some new models and possibly doing away with others." They also hint at a future iPod model that combines features of the shuffle and mini. Full article here.
- Select Wal-Mart stores selling HP branded iPods. AppleInsider (again) reports that select Wal-Mart stores have received between 2 and 5 of the 20GB iPod model as a sales trial. Weird that they would be selling the HP branded one. Full article here.
