iPoditude Review: Clips 4 C4 shuffle clips for iPod shuffle

People in Sweden have cool names. Lars, Magnus, Thor, I mean, come on. And you just know that any girl named Inga has to be a babe, right? Well, I've got some Swedish iPod shuffle cases to talk about and maybe their name, "Clips 4 C4 shuffle clips," is not as cool as "Bjorn," the products are pretty nice nonetheless.

The Facts
Specifications according to the manufacturer:

- Material:High strength plastic PC material
- Colors:Piano black, clear, pink translucent, lime translucent
- Price: US $12.95 each

Construction and Materials
The Clips 4 shuffle clips feature a two piece design. One piece fits over the front and sides of the iPod shuffle and features cut outs for the control pad and headphone jack. The back piece has a small and flexible belt clip molded onto it. The belt clip won't grip anything very thick, but does a good job of clipping onto a notebook or a shirt pocket. The clip can flex a lot, an amazing amount actually, so that helps it grip onto things despite the fact that it has no hook at the end.

To assemble the Clips 4 shuffle clip, slide the back piece into grooves molded in the front piece. The two pieces click securely together.

The build quality is very good. All of the edges and mold seams are polished and professional. The colors used are vibrant and very attractive and the plastic has a very glossy finish to it. As with the iPod itself, having a mirror-like finish means that it is prone to show scratches and the Clips 4 shuffle clips are no exception. The good news, however, is that scratches are really only noticeable on the black case, and the plastic used is quite scratch-resistant. In my normal usage, the cases received no scratches and still looked new after about a week of carrying around.

The black case and, to a lesser degree, the translucent pink case, both came out of the packaging with slight scuffing on the front under the cut out for the control pad. I don't know if this was damage caused in shipping or a manufacturing defect.

Usage
The Clips 4 shuffle clips have a number of strong factors going for them and they were a pleasure to use. The company sent me cases in each of their four colors. The front and back parts are interchangeable and you can swap out different parts to create different color combinations. This is particularly interesting since the black parts interact with the translucent colors to create some nice visual effects. My favorite look is the black back panel with the green front.

The iPod fits inside of the case nearly perfectly. Just plop your iPod into the front piece and slide the back piece upwards through grooves of the front piece. The back panel slides easily into place and closes with a reassuring snap. Once enclosed, the iPod only moves the slightest amount inside the case when jiggled, and due to the stiff and strong design of the case, my iPod was very well protected inside. There is no padding, but none is needed.

The back panel must be slid down in order to access the iPod's control slider. This may be a bother for some people, personally I didn't think it was a big deal since it's a simple matter to slide the back panel a couple of inches downward.

The Bottom Line
The Clips 4 shuffle clips are protective and attractive. They are high quality and it's fun to change around the colors if you buy more than one. This product is a strong contender in the iPod shuffle case market and one that I think is worthy of consideration.

The good: Excellent fit and finish; attractive design and colors; protective; interchangeable parts make for lots of color combinations.
The not so good: Must slide back plate down in order to access the iPod's control slider; belt clip for light-duty uses only.

I order the product, my credit card was charged, and the product never arrived. Unfortunately there is NO contact information on the clips4.com website except for an e-mail address intended for resellers. I e-mailed the address several times describing my issue and received no response. I ended up having to dispute the charge with my bank. What a pain and a waste of time to have to deal with this.

I had the exact same problem (ordered the item, credit card charged, but never received the product) and am currently disputing the charge with my bank. What a disappointment, as this seemed to be the perfect case for my shuffle.
