iPoditude Review: WaterField Designs small iPod Gear Pouch

WaterField Designs is amongst the many manufacturers that have updated their product lines to better accommodate the iPod nano. I tested and really enjoyed their large iPod gear pouch late last year, and in fact, I still use it every day. So when I heard that they had revised their small iPod gear pouch I thought this was a good time to take a look it. I'm happy to say that this little pouch has lived up to my high expectations. The beauty in this bag is that you don't have to be a hardcore gadget freak to use it, it would be great for any iPod owner.

The Facts
Specifications according to the manufacturer:

- Material: Ballistic nylon with soft interior lining and self-locking zippers.
- Colors: Blue, celeste, checkers, taxi (review sample), lead.
- Weight: 2oz.
- Size: 7.75" x 3.75" x 1.2"
- Price: US $29

Construction and Materials
Like its big brother, the exterior of the small iPod gear pouch is made from tough ballistic nylon and their unique Indium nylon. This Indium nylon is very unique and really cool. It's tough and durable and adds a very eye-catching style to the bag.

The interior of the bag has a copious amount of padding, in fact, all outer walls are padded and the pocket dividers are made from the same material. Squeeze the bag when empty and it feels like a pillow. This bag is also surprisingly light when it's empty.

The zipper is a self-locking YKK mechanism and it's very nice. Two wide external nylon straps are firmly sewn to the bag so you can grab onto it a number of ways, or even attach your iPod to it.

All of the sewing and the construction of the bag is perfect. Absolutely spot on. Nice.

Usage
This bag is small, rectangular, and shaped like a wiener dog. Despite its diminutive size, I found that an iPod (mini, nano, or regular), my Etymotic ER-6 earphones wrapped around a earPod case, my iPod shuffle, and a dock cable all fit very well inside. The pockets on one side are thin and the pockets on the other side are thicker and this gives you some flexibility as to where you put your gear. In between these pockets there is a long thin area in the middle for something long or thin.

The small size and rectangular shape of the WaterField Designs small iPod gear pouch lends a slightly feminine quality to it. It doesn't really look like a purse, but it doesn't really look like a hardcore gadget bag either. I don't mind displaying this pouch on my desk and carrying it in my usual saddle bag, but I don't think I'd walk down the street just carrying it in my hand. Their large iPod gear pouch, being substantially larger, doesn't suffer from this same stigma in my opinion.

The Bottom Line
I have nothing but praise for the small iPod Gear Pouch from WaterField Designs. It is really cool looking, with that unique Indium nylon trim, the quality of materials and workmanship is outstanding, and it is sized perfectly for an iPod and a few accessories. What's more, it is very protective, being so padded, and that seems ever more important these days. You don't have to be a hardcore gearhead or gadget freak to like this small iPod gear pouch, if you're just looking for a way to keep your iPod from getting all scratched up or trying to keep from losing all of your items, I think that this pouch from WaterField Designs would be a perfect match.

The good: Perfect construction and workmanship; tough, durable, and stylish materials; extremely lightweight; very protective; looks cool.
The not so good: May be too small for serious gearheads (consider the large gear pouch instead).
