iPod Hi-Fi: We will, we will, rock you

An Apple-branded speaker system is kind of like the Sasquatch of the iPod accessory kingdom. Long-rumored but rarely sighted, and you always knew that it could exist. Well, today we get to see it in the flesh. Dubbed the iPod Hi-Fi, Apple is clearly going after the high-end market with a product that would seem to double not only as a portable speaker system, but could serve as the only sound system in an apartment or small home.
According to Apple, the iPod Hi-Fi produces a large soundstage, precise imaging, and a wide frequency range. According to iPoditude.com, it looks cool, too. Two 80mm drivers provide highs and mids, while a single 130mm woofer rounds out the bottom end. The enclosure is a trick sealed/vented hybrid that took some serious engineering. The iPod Hi-Fi speaker system also features AC or DC (via 6 D-cell batteries) power modes, built-in handles in its double-walled plastic shell, comes with a remote control, and there is a combo analog/optical audio input jack on the back. It sells for $349 and is available from the Apple Store immediately. Extra coolness points when coupled with a wireless AirTunes to create a whole-house streaming music system.

I’m completely underwhelmed.
I was expecting that they’d update the Mac mini (actually, I predicted this upgrade almost exactly) but I hoped they’d also market a Firewire or USB hardware H.264 encoder for cable/et cetera. I didn’t give a flying fuck about a speaker with an iPod plug, really, and the iPod holder’s a total ripoff.
The biggest disappointment was that they didn’t come out with the iPod enhancements I’d been hoping for.
All in all, nothing to get excited about. Dammit.

Why is Apple releasing a speaker system aimed at audiophiles when the music in iTunes music store is not high enough quality to benefit?
The iPod Hi-Fi is just stupid. I’m underwhelmed!

I was also dissapointed with these announcements. I guess I was expecting too much. Besides, why in the world would I spend that much on these speakers when its so heavy and I cant travel with it. I’d rather use my high quality PC speakers instead!

When you think of ipod, u think of a small and sweet music system, which can travel with you wherever u like. But what’s the use of these heavy bulky gadgets.
grrrrr

iPod Hi-Fi really rocks. But don’t u think so it should sleak and mobile. Thats comes into ones mind when one thinks of iPod. Why so large in size.

My friend bought Hi-Fi right when it was released. I think sound quality is pretty great comparing to what I was expecting. I would recommend this to everybody who wants to get rid of old stereos and have all-in-one package with decent sound quality.

iPod Hi-Fi is an answer to stereo systems we used to have it long back. Everything is perfect about it. Great sound that rocks the place and its looks also. Making it all the more desirable.

it sounds fairly cool
size may be be a problem
but it gives it better sound quality

I was thinking of buying iPod Hi-Fi for a long time and this one is with sound quality. Thats the most important factor while buying a iPod.

What the hell you ve to do with the hi-fi sound system when you ve to use ear phones to it. And my dear there’s some extent to listening when you are using handsfree.

I m not interested in the one just because its an Apple product. I really had a bad experience with them.
……i had this labtop of Apple few months back.It complained of over heating and vibration. And it was too frustating wen Apple support did’nt turned up despite of regular pleadings. I sweared not to turn my head back to any of the Apple products.

This system is way over priced for the sound quality. This would be a decent system for about 150, but for 350 its a complete waste of money. There are much better choices out there for ipod stereo systems. The bass in the system is lacking and the ipod is completely exposed and would be easily damaged in the event of an accident

I am in great dilema that whether I should go for it or not. As in looks it’s look great but I am not sure it’s worth purchasing or not! I have been looking in for an iPod but not too sure too go for Apple product!
Will somebody please suggest me…

This looks really cool and nice. Just one thing in my mind is stopping me from purchasing is that what if it doesn’t get upto my ex[pectation then what I’m gonna do. Otherwise everything is okay.

I bought one of these yesterday, and Im very happy with it, but remember the investement-cost of rechargable D-batteries plus a charger for those big batteries (about 112 euros extra cost here).
When that is said, the richness of the sound surprises me. and it is a lot louder than it looks! Perfect for bringing to the skatepark or basketball-course, grill-party, whatever, but there is one catch:
The iPod itself is _very_ exposed sitting in the dock, you might not want a basketball bouncing on top of it, or even direct sunlight hitting your precious black iPod nano! You can always use the line-in connector and tuck away the iPod somewhere safer (i.e. behind:), but then all remote and iPod-charging functions are lost.
Maybe you can get away with a female->male dock-extension-cable, but I have not seen those type of cables around yet. Anyone else?
At normal sound levels this thing is the second best speakers I have ever listened to, reminds me of studio-monitors, but with a little bit more “oomph”, and a little narrower, but stereo-sound is maintained quite well. At extreme loud levels the bass is distorted a bit too easy, but the right EQ-settings can help fix that.
If you are looking for something very portable, remember that this thing weighs pretty much, I suspect that the wheight improves the sound, and it adds to the feeling of quality and a “make-no-compromise-type” of engineering and design.

I am using this from a long time and till date I didn’t find any problem. I think it’s amazing and also very portable. So now why to miss something at this point in time!
